Usui was the principal of the Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan as well as a Christian preacher and missionary. He became interested in healing when one of his students inquired about biblical stories of healing.
He traveled to the United States to receive further Christian training at the University of Chicago, to learn about the healing skills described in the Bible. After seven years of study in the U.S., he began pursuing other philosophies and religions, including Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, and Buddhism.
When further research led him to teachings in Sanskrit, Usui found the answer he was looking for. An inscription about the laying on of hands provided the inspiration for his healing method.
