About Sabine Heubusch
My story
As a dancer, I was devastated when a doctor told me: "Once you have a knee problem, you'll always have a knee problem!" Hoping to find a solution, I started to search for alternatives. In 1997, I discovered the Alexander Technique. Through my studies of the Alexander Technique I realized that I had developed movement patterns to compensate for the weakness of my injured knee and the musculature around it. I was favoring the healthy leg and used it mostly as the standing leg, which was weakening the muscles around my injured knee, and which started to affect my back as well. I didn’t know what the Alexander Technique was or how it worked, but I started to notice a shift. I became calmer and felt more at ease with myself, trusting that I could learn how to deal with my knee and get it to fully function again. After one year of private lessons, I enrolled in the three-year, full-time teacher-training program at the American Center for the Alexander Technique in New York City.
Studying the Alexander Technique was life-changing for me. By learning how to be aware of what I was doing, I was able to replace harmful habits with coordinated and economical movements. The impact on my well-being became very obvious: I learned how to take care of my knee by avoiding pressure, tension, and stress. As a result I started dancing and performing again with a completely different understanding of my body, and expressing flow and ease with my new movement vocabulary. My back pain gradually disappeared, my posture improved, my shoulders started to open. I started to experience deeper sleep, got fewer colds and was able to breathe fully and freely.
The Alexander Technique makes learning accessible and fun for me.
Yoga and Pilates support me in being a strong performer, and Reiki gives me the tool for supporting myself and others in healing. The Alexander Technique shows me how to approach life with ease and openness.
